WATERCOLOR PAINTS AND BRUSHES
Don uses American Journey paint from Cheap Joe’s Art Stuff but most professional brands are interchangeable and include Holbein, Windsor Newton, Daniel Smith. If you don’t have all the colors just use similar colors from your own palette.
*FOR "PLACING THE LIGHT IN YOUR PAINTING" ZOOM WEBINAR DON WILL USE THE FOLLOWING LIMITED PALETTE:
Manganese Blue
Ultramarine Blue
Aureolin Yellow
Burnt Sienna
Scarlet Lake or Red Hot Momma (Cheap Joes American Journey )
Permanent Magenta
This demo will be on a half sheet (15"x22") of Arches 140# cold-press watercolor paper. Any cotton watercolor paper will work.
*You’ll also need an extra sheet of good watercolor paper as we will be doing a few practical warm up exercises. It is critical that you have plentiful and moist paint.
- Any size sketch book, markers or pencils.
- Watercolor paper (Don uses Arches Cold Press or Rough 140lb.) Most of Don’s demos are half sheets.
- Students are encouraged to work at any size they wish but have plenty of paper on hand.
- One easel per student (preferably a table easel, Don uses a French Box easel) as we will be working on a slant of about 25 to 30 degrees. You can also improvise, leaning your board against something, as long as it is secure, and not at too sharp an angle…
- The usual watercolor supplies: Palette, (butchers’ tray or large mixing tray is also helpful) paint, brushes, water container, paint board with clamps, paper towels, etc.
WATERCOLOR PAINTS AND BRUSHES
- NOTE: Don presently uses Cheap Joes and Robert Simmons synthetic white sable brushes, although other brands are fine. Round brushes include sizes 36, 26, 14, 10 and 8. Flat brushes include 2”,1 ½”, 1” ½”, ¼”. He does recommend having a big, medium and small of both flat and round brushes. Lately he’s been painting half and quarter sheets as well so adjusts brush size accordingly.

* Students always ask about the slant of Don's easel so here is a photo of his studio set up. This is an important part of using granulation as the paint flows down the page to mix. If you don't have an easel just put something sturdy under the top of the board to make about a 30 degree angle.
